Clearly your not a piece worker

Kody Horvey · September 10, 2014 at 3:22 AM

Thanks for all your comments and views! I always aim to show you how and
why things work…to show the logic and physics behind it, otherwise you
may miss the subtle things I do that allows me to do it properly. Taping is
tricky and everyday I learn a new trick.

KFLY67 · September 10, 2014 at 3:50 AM

let me ask why do sheet rockers use that paper tape stuff as oppose to the
sticky mesh sheet rock tape

cloverdale87 · September 10, 2014 at 4:47 AM

I use spray glue and 24″ roll of wallpaper. cut in 1/2 on the saw. Making
12″ wide strips.
Spray
Stick
Mud with 18″ knife pulled tight
Finnish coat reddy in 20 min

I was a union (4 year apprenticeship) commercial drywall finisher/ painter
for 20+ years and I couldn’t imagine doing butt joints that slow and also
that 4 inch “Putty Knife” is actually called a taping knife.

FYI: There several different sizes of taping knives (4″-12″) and there is
basically one size (2″) putty knife.

I will however give you kudos for using a hawk and trowel the right way.
Not that many drywall finishers these days even know what that is or how to
use it.
After all these years of eating dust and working my butt off I called it
quits doing drywall finishing and painting because there is really no money
in this trade because everyone (homeowners) is broke and they want you to
work for minimum wage, so I now run my own parking lot striping business
and I couldn’t be happier. I just wished what I know now I knew 20 years
ago because I would have never even messed with drywall finishing or
painting, I would have just started my striping business.

Too slow? Not a pro? WTF is wrong with you assholes. It is a video to
learn. He is showing multiple ways to do the job. It isn’t about speed.
What a bunch of dicks! Why are you even here?

Brook Anderson · September 10, 2014 at 5:46 AM

Not bad for a complete rookie. But like the gentlemen mentioned below, very
slow.
This would be a good video to watch if you want to patch a hole, but
drywall finishing requires a lot of expensive tools and knowledge.
I have been a finisher for 25 years and my friends who are tradesmen can’t
even attempt small jobs. All you are doing is setting up some poor home
owner up for a big let down
when some ding dong shows up sounding like a pro because he watched a Kody
Horvey video one night while bored.
I have and education in drywall finishing at BCIT and i have over 60 grand
in tools.
Your video is simplifies a very complicated trade, that takes many many hrs
to conquer.
Good luck

Thanks for taking the time to prepare an excellent video. We have done
some drywall work but it has been several years. you have brought us up to
speed. Great.

Fred Allen · September 10, 2014 at 6:56 AM

Thanks Kody for the carefully done and well detailed vid. Lots of us are
total rookies so it is really appreciated.

Ian Iracheta · September 10, 2014 at 7:56 AM

22 minutes per joint?

Travis Allington · September 10, 2014 at 8:31 AM

hawk and trowel. aka the canuck way

Dmitri Paramonov · September 10, 2014 at 9:04 AM

Who does it that way? Use an actual mudding knife doing 4 coats ? Sanding
between them I can’t believe this any pro will tell u u only sand once when
finished if u are good not you lol putting on so much mud are u high dude?

Senad Senad · September 10, 2014 at 10:04 AM

in germany they put just one 2-3 inches coat and after that they send
…and all done and looks perfect !!!
4 coats of mud and 12 inches wide ????
wasted time and mud,nothing else…

Angel Galarza · September 10, 2014 at 10:30 AM

dude sorry but i have been doing drywall tape for about 28 years.first you
are using wrong blades,2nd way 2 much mud for a single line. a real
drywaller would have done this in 2 try’s.but i guess everyone work’s in
they own special way’s.

gregory davis · September 10, 2014 at 11:28 AM

great video looks good!!!

ArmorGaming Clans · September 10, 2014 at 11:44 AM

lol If I taped like that they would be looking for another taper, no
offense but the GC really does not care. I use to care about how my worked
looked but I was always the one sitting at home and they brought in the
hackers. so I less care not but still comes out good with out all the
steps.

cubcadet1983 · September 10, 2014 at 11:47 AM

Looks like it is hard for you to move slowly. Hahahaha nice job though.

Amber Weller · September 10, 2014 at 12:28 PM

NEVER dent in drywall on a butt ! it causes delamination of paper to gypsum
and the butt will show !

Michael Durkin · September 10, 2014 at 12:38 PM

I’m a pan and knife guy, but play with the H&T when I can. I use this same
technique on my butts. As for the speed, give him some slack. He is going
slowly on purpose. It’s a demonstrational video. No one would learn
anything if it was a 20 second vid of the guy just doing it.

spinbubba · September 10, 2014 at 12:54 PM

dont dent it, it will crack if the dent is too deep, use 5min to fill it
then tape in when its dry

Brian Bohnet · September 10, 2014 at 1:10 PM

After watching half a dozen videos to find out how and why to follow a
certain technique, finally someone who explains it all! Excellent video and
we DIY guys appreciate your time and efforts to show us how to do it
right!!!

Agnes Sakowska · September 10, 2014 at 1:39 PM

He’s doing it slow for people that don’t know how to do it and not for
people that have 20+ years of experience.

Andrew Urig · September 10, 2014 at 2:30 PM

Dude wore the same green shirt two days in a row?

andrew goodwin · September 10, 2014 at 3:23 PM

jeppers he must b skimming that wall wot a wast

Harold Crossman · September 10, 2014 at 3:53 PM

Excellent video. You explained and showed your technique effectively.
Thanks for passing on your knowledge and skill. I’ll be repairing two
very visible walls this week, and fortunately, the joints won’t be!
